GENERAL TRAVEL INFORMATION

  1. The tour is offered in partnership with Issayan Travel, a Benghazi-based travel agency that has been leading tours within Libya or over a decade. Their tour guides speak English and have special knowledge and contacts in all parts of the itinerary.
  2. On trips out of Tripoli or Benghazi, travelers will be allowed to leave some belongings at a secure site and travel with a light day-pack. Most side trips (especially to archaeological sites) will require physical stamina and ability to stay on one’s feet for up to 5 hours. Bring appropriate footwear for desert climates.
  3. Hotels have business centers for sending faxes or e-mail to the U.S. Internet cafes can also be found in Tripoli and Benghazi. If desired, tour members can make international calls from Libya using wireless cell phones.
  4. Travelers will be able to purchase bottled water (with sealed caps) at all locations. Issayan Travel will supply bottled water during mini-bus trips.
  5. In January, temperatures in the desert (see Days 4, 5 & 6 of Itinerary) can reach 100°F. At night, temperatures cool rapidly. Rain is possible in coastal areas.  Please bring appropriate clothing for these temperature extremes.
  6. Women should be dressed modestly, except when they are swimming. Long pants or skirts are acceptable.  Foreign women are expected to keep heads uncovered, except when in mosques or to protect themselves from sun.
  7. Because of a generally strong Libyan security presence, Americans can browse safely in the medinas (city centers) and souks (markets). When travelers choose to go out on such excursions, translators will be available (if needed).
  8. Except for air travel between Benghazi and Tripoli, travel on good roads will be by air-conditioned mini-bus. Four-wheel drive vehicles or camels may be briefly available in the desert areas.
  9. Travelers can purchase fresh 35mm film, batteries or DVD tape for video-cameras at photography stores in Tripoli or Benghazi. In general, Libyan people do not mind being photographed, but photographers should avoid all military subjects or installations.
  10. Credit cards can only be used in a few large hotels in Tripoli.
  11. The overall tour price ($2,400) covers the following costs:
    • Transfer from airports to hotels and from hotels to airports by modern bus or coach.
    • 4X4-land  cruiser vehicles (3 or 4 passengers in each vehicle) in the desert area.
    • All lodging and portage charges at hotels.
    • English-speaking local tour guides as needed in archeological sites.
    • Entrance fees to sites and museums.
    • Meals plan: Full board (breakfast, lunch, dinner) – picnics in remote areas
    • All taxes and services charges (not including tips, which are extra)
    • Refreshment stops en route – coffee, tea or soft drinks
    • All costs for drivers, helpers and other staff
    • Sealed water bottles in coastal and desert area (not in cities)
  1. Lodging will be on the double plan: two persons per room. Those who want to stay in single rooms will be charged $300 additional covering the entire tour. If single rooms are not available at some locations, single-room travelers will be refunded a pro-rated amount for each night they are required to double up.
  2. After reading the following agreement (which opens as a PDF file), subscribers are requested to return a signed copy of the agreement with a $500 deposit. This deposit is non-refundable after November 30, 2004. The balance of the payment will be collected in Tripoli on the first day after arrival. Bring travelers checks to cover this amount, plus all you need for personal purchases.
  3. The tour is limited to 12 people. After all spaces are filled, additional applications will not be accepted  until September, 2005.
